Lay Speaking is more than just speaking!

This ministry goes beyond filling in for the pastor or speaking in public.  Lay Speaking Ministries, as defined in The United Methodist Book of Discipline, offers wonderful possibilities for serving in roles beyond what we have traditionally understood.  Teaching, serving, training, leading, participating, caring, loving, and communicating are now integral parts of Lay Speaking Ministries.  How lay speaking servants can help congregations and communities is limited only by your imaginations and willingness to serve as a representative of Jesus Christ. 

Classes are open to anyone who wishes to expand their knowledge.  Attendees who are not Local Church Lay Speakers (Servants) or Certified Lay Speakers (Servants) will receive a certificate of attendance for participating. 

Lay Speaking Ministries Basic Course

This class is for anyone who wishes to become a Local Church Lay Speaker or current Local Church Lay Speakers wishing to renew.

This is the first step in becoming a recognized Lay Speaker (Servant).  This required orientation focuses on the three primary areas of Lay Servant Ministry: leading, caring and communicating.  The Basic Course includes a study of what it means to be God’s called people and how we may be at work for God in our own communities. 

(Local Church Lay Speakers are required to take a course every 3 years to maintain their status.  If you have not taken the Basic course since 2008 this is a NEW Basic Course. You may take an advanced class to renew your status and remain a LCLS.)

Lay Pastoral Care Giving

Instructor:  Rev. Bonnie Pizzeck

Total class fee $30.00

How do you learn to care for others in the community—whether the community of faith or the extended community?  This course offers insights into how you can improve your caring skills and help church leaders reach out with God’s love and care to others.

 

Prayer in the Christian’s Life and in the Life of the Church

Instructor:  Rev. Becky Cloud

Why is prayer so important and how we can become more excited about our own personal prayer life?  We will then build on that to look at the most effective manner in which to lead others in public prayer

Total Fee $30.00

 

How to Prepare a Sermon

Instructor:  Rev. Paul Greer

This class will provide guidance and direction to prepare a message for Lay Speakers (Servants) who wish to preach. Bring your Bible.
