 On February 19th 174 youth and adults from 15 district churches converged on the 4-H center at Smith Mountain Lake for the Lynchburg District Youth Retreat.
The goal of the weekend was to learn how to Be the Church.
Bart Campolo came with a powerful and challenging message. He challenged the youth to first learn how to be loved, then learn how to have a loving community (church), and then share that love with the entire world. Bart proposed that they start with one person in their school that needs love and spend time as a group loving that person.
After each of Bart's talks the youth were split into small groups to discuss what was said. Bart also led a small group for youth workers. He gave the youth groups plenty to talk about on the way home!
During the weekend worship was lead by Timberlake's worship band Exit Eden. On Saturday night, communion was led by Rev. Phillip Waltz from Fort Hill. Sunday morning's worship service was led by the District Worship
Team.
The youth also participated in a Stop Hunger Now mission project on Saturday afternoon. They were able to package 10,000 meals that will be sent to Africa. They also collected over 100 cans of canned food for a local food pantry and almost $400 for Youth Service Fund.
The youth also had time to have fun. There was a rock band competition and talent show. There was also plenty of free time to meet new friends and hang out with old friends. Overall it was a great event and the youth are looking forward to next year's!
