Second Chance Program![]() ![]() ![]()
New Session started March 1, 2011! Click here to view the Spring newsletter When a need arises, God provided…and how wonderful it is! The students at E.C. Glass High School have been extremely fortunate to have the volunteer service of a team of retired teachers organized through Parkview United Methodist Mission. Students who had previously failed a semester class during the school year could retake the course for credit after school over a extended number of weeks. Retired teachers provided instruction and mentoring as students worked to complete the coursework in a timely manner. The 2nd Chance program has benefited hundreds of students but was cut in the 2010-11 school year budget. Through the generosity and goodness of the team at Parkview, students were still able to recover credit, thus avoiding summer school, reducing retentions, and improving the graduation rate. Reverend and Mrs. Willie Butler worked tirelessly with teachers and students to make this a reality when E. C. Glass thought there was no viable alternative. Students took courses last fall and are now completing another set of course this spring. I don’t think I have to tell anyone how hard it is to get students to commit to an afterschool program (even when it is for their benefit). Sincere gratitude and appreciation is extended to Willie and Pat Butler and their team of retired teachers. We literally could not have done this without you and look forward to our continued alliance in the future.
