DEPARTMENTS OF SOCIAL SERVICES
The first step to getting assistance is to go to your Department of Social Services. Sign up for your benefits programs and get a case manager. Not only will this begin the process toward financial stability, but also many social service agencies will not work with you until you have a case manager. Benefits programs offered through Departments of Social Services typically include Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), Medicaid, Food Stamps, Emergency Aid, Family Access to Medical Insurance Security (FAMIS), and Fuel Assistance.
